Expression-Whammy

 

The Expression-Whammy is a whammy bar that doesn’t detune the guitar but instead generates an expression signal. This signal can then be used to control all kinds of effects pedals.

The inspiration for this innovation came from the designs of my ORION and SIRIUS models. The bridge design is based on stringed instruments such as the violin. This offers several advantages, including fast attack and excellent string separation. A tremolo system on the bridge would undermine this concept.

I originally developed this system for customers who still want a tremolo system on their guitar or bass. The signal can also be used to control a pitch shifter.

The Expression-Whammy’s signal is digitized, converted, and then sent back to digital potentiometers. The resistors and pin assignments are switchable, making the system adaptable to any effects unit. You can control with the Whammy’s up movement a different device than with the Whammy’s down movement.
